Baboons are a genus of primates belonging to the family Cercopithecidae in the suborder Sinuriformes of the order Primates. They are relatively large primates, second only to orangutans in size, with a body length of 50.8–114.2 cm, a tail length of 38.2–71.1 cm, and a weight that can reach 60 kg.

The head is thick and long, with a prominent muzzle, small ears, prominent brow ridges, deep-set eyes, and long, sharp canine teeth that can reach 5 cm in length; it has cheek pouches; it has a robust body, with four limbs of equal length, short and thick, adapted for ground activities; it has brightly colored calluses on its rump; its fur is yellow, yellowish-brown, greenish-brown to brown, generally darker on the tail; the fur is coarse, with short hair on the face and ears, while males have long hair around the face, neck, and shoulders, and females have shorter hair.

They inhabit tropical rainforests, savannas, semi-desert grasslands, highland mountains, low hills, plains, or canyon cliffs. They are primarily terrestrial, but also climb trees to sleep or forage. They are good swimmers and can produce loud calls. They are active during the day and roost in large tree branches or caves at night.

Their diet includes various small animals and plants. They are gregarious, living in groups of a dozen to over a hundred individuals. Their main predator is the leopard. They have no fixed breeding season and give birth to one cub per litter. Their lifespan in the wild is approximately 20 years. They are mainly distributed in Africa, with some species also found in the Arabian Peninsula.

Baboons are the only higher monkeys that live in large, encamped groups. They also have the most rigid social structure among monkeys, with a clear hierarchy and strict discipline, and their punishments are terrifyingly cruel. In the wild, baboon groups engage in conflict every few years, resulting in either group splitting or a change of leadership.

Because the law of the baboon kingdom is that the new replaces the old and the strong replace the weak. Baboons generally reach sexual maturity around the age of six, and their aggressiveness naturally has a reproductive factor in competing for mates.

Of course, baboon troop are not always fighting. After a new king is elected, they are usually very stable for a long time, and their population increases and grows rapidly.
