Doomsday Mechanic: My Train Can Be Modified Infinitely

Chapter 57 Omens of the End Times

Chapter 57 Omens of the End Times

At 11 p.m., the interior of the Longyuan finally quieted down.

The daytime hustle and bustle and construction noise had faded away, leaving only the LED grow lights in the fourth planting pod still on their lowest night light mode, emitting a soft, pale blue glow. Lin Luo'er sat at her workbench, recording today's installation data by the light of the lamp. She had changed out of her loose work clothes and was now wearing a close-fitting light gray cashmere sweater; the soft material accentuated her beautiful curves, and her long hair cascaded loosely over her shoulders, winding gently around her neck and shoulders.

When Wang Zhengyang walked in, his gaze lingered on her for a moment. In the light of the night lamp, the lines of her profile extended upwards from her slender waist, forming a full and smooth curve at her chest, the texture of her cashmere sweater rising and falling slightly with her breath. When she was focused, her lips were slightly pursed, her eyelashes casting fine shadows on her cheeks, and her fingers holding the pen were slender yet strong.

"Still not resting?" His voice wasn't loud, but it was clearly audible in the quiet carriage.

Lin Luo'er looked up and saw him. A smile naturally spread across her face, a smile that was a little tired but genuine: "I want to record the installation details of today. When Engineer Chen was welding the water tank, he made some on-site adjustments to the support structure, so I need to update the drawings."

Wang Zhengyang walked to her side, his gaze sweeping over the open notebook before settling back on her. Up close, he could see more clearly the contours of her body beneath her cashmere sweater—the curve of her shoulders, the faint outline of her collarbone, and the firm, full curves of her chest that remained shapely even while seated. Her figure, usually concealed by her formal work attire, now revealed a striking feminine allure in the private night.

"Thank you for your hard work today," he said, his voice lower than usual.

Lin Luo'er put down her pen, raised her hand to rub her slightly sore neck, a movement that caused her to lean forward slightly, making the curves of her chest more pronounced under her cashmere sweater. "Watching the system gradually take shape is quite fulfilling." She paused, turning her head to look at the equipment in the carriage, her profile delicate and soft under the light, "Zhengyang, the systems you designed are so comprehensive... it's as if they're truly prepared to cope with some kind of long-term isolation."

Her voice was very soft, as if she were testing the waters, with a hint of barely perceptible curiosity.

Wang Zhengyang remained silent for a moment. The only sound in the carriage was the low hum of the circulating water pump.

Then he reached out and gently placed his palm on her slender shoulder. This wasn't a professional touch; his palm could clearly feel the shape of her shoulder blades and the warmth of her skin beneath her cashmere sweater. His thumb unconsciously caressed the junction of her neck and shoulder, where the skin was exceptionally soft.

Lin Luo'er's body trembled slightly, but she did not dodge. She simply looked up at him, her eyes reflecting a pale blue light.

"What if I said yes?" Wang Zhengyang's voice was close to her ear, deep and intimate. "What if I really am preparing to deal with some kind of... impending change?"

He raised his other hand and gently cupped her cheek. His fingertips could feel the delicate touch of her skin, the exquisite curve of her jawline as if sculpted. This position compelled her to move closer to him; he could smell the faint fragrance of her hair, a blend of botanical and metallic coolness.

Lin Luo'er's breath hitched for a moment, her eyes widened slightly, and his face was reflected in her pupils. Her hand unconsciously gripped the edge of the worktable, her knuckles turning slightly white, but this movement also straightened her back, making the curves of her chest appear fuller and more prominent under her tight cashmere sweater, rising and falling slightly with her somewhat rapid breathing.

Their eyes met. Something in the air subtly changed, becoming warm and dense.

Wang Zhengyang's gaze slowly moved down from her eyes, past her slightly parted lips, her gracefully shaped neck, and finally settled on her chest, which was heaving with tension. The soft material of the cashmere sweater faithfully outlined the full and beautiful shape of her breasts, with a slight bulge visible at the top. His hand slid down her shoulder, following the curve of her arm, and finally stopped at her elbow, his fingertips able to feel the warmth of her skin and her subtle trembling.

Just as Wang Zhengyang slowly lowered his head, the two were so close they could feel the warmth of each other's breath, his lips almost touching her forehead—

A crisp bell rang out abruptly.

It's Lin Luo'er's phone.

The momentary silence was broken. Lin Luo'er blinked as if waking from a dream, her cheeks quickly flushing red, the blush spreading to her ears. She frantically pulled her phone from her pocket; the screen's light illuminated her reddened cheeks, and the name displayed on it made her expression freeze.

"It's my sister," she said softly, her voice still slightly breathless. She glanced at Wang Zhengyang, then pressed the answer button. "Hello, sis? Still up so late?"

Wang Zhengyang stepped back half a step, giving her space to answer the phone, but his mechanical affinity, at a mere 0.55% arousal level, made his auditory sensitivity far exceed that of ordinary people. Even without consciously listening, the voice on the other end of the phone was still faintly discernible.

A clear, slightly hurried female voice came through the phone, speaking quickly but using professional language: "Luo'er! Is it a convenient time for you to talk? I just came from the lab, and some data is abnormal... I think I should tell you."

"Sister, go ahead, I'm listening." Lin Luo'er's expression turned serious, and she tried her best to make her voice sound steady.

"In the past week, the background noise levels of the three high-precision magnetic spectrometers in the lab have increased abnormally by 15%, and cross-calibration has ruled out equipment malfunctions." Lin Wei, the older sister, lowered her voice. "The coherence time of the quantum interference device has shown an inexplicable periodic decay. Our supervisor urgently convened a core group meeting today, revealing that CERN and several international partners' dark matter detection projects have observed similar 'background field perturbations'."

Lin Luo'er gripped her phone tightly, her knuckles turning slightly white: "Any papers or warnings?"

"There's no publicly available documentation, but the frequency of encrypted communications between laboratories in several European countries has increased significantly. Someone at the meeting mentioned that Fermilab and Stanford's linear accelerator center in the US also reported 'unidentified signal interference.'" Lin Wei paused. "Luo'er, this isn't an isolated instrument malfunction. Judging from the data characteristics, it seems like some subtle but continuous change is occurring in the local physical environment of the entire Earth..."

The sound of turning pages came from the other end of the phone: "A friend in the ecological monitoring team told me privately that several observation points they set up in the Alps have recently recorded disruptions in the diurnal activity rhythms of bears and foxes. This data hasn't been released to the public yet, but the internal assessment has already been raised to the 'needs attention' level."

"Is there any official statement?" Lin Luo'er asked, her gaze unconsciously drifting towards Wang Zhengyang.
