Chapter 234 Eyes of Despair
Chapter 234 Eyes of Despair
Chapter 234 Eyes of Despair (5k)
One night later, at approximately 9:40 a.m., in the Atlanta area, near Athens, inside the general's camp, Johnny and his son Anglu were in their assigned house.
Johnny sat on Anglu's bed and slowly unwrapped the bandages on Anglu's legs, replacing them with new splints.
"Ugh————"
Anglu groaned, then desperately tried to suppress his pain.
It takes a hundred days to recover from a broken bone, but his lower leg was fractured; it's not going to heal easily!
It's just that he can rely on the super strong willpower he has honed through extreme sports to force himself to work despite having a splint on his leg.
Seeing his son enduring the pain, Johnny took a deep breath, then reached out and grabbed his son's neck, pulling his head close to his own.
He spoke to Anglu with a grave expression.
"Anglu, you know, we've been staying with the general for seven whole days!"
"Yes, I know, Dad. We should leave now; Mom is waiting for us!"
Anglu looked at his father with unwavering eyes, but as he responded, his father frowned, looked at Anglu's legs, and then gently shook his head.
Johnny shook his head and sighed.
"No, Anglu, you need to wait to recover. Your leg—it's not recovering as quickly as we expected!"
"The general's camp doesn't have the medical team we had before the apocalypse, nor does it have a world-class rehabilitation center to help us recover quickly."
"I estimate your injury will require at least two to three weeks before you can move around with minimal effort!"
At this point, Johnny clutched his head in anguish; he was utterly mortified!
On one hand, there is his wife who has been missing for nearly a month, and on the other hand, there is his son who is still recovering from serious injuries. What should he choose?
What choice does he have?
Seeing his father's conflicted expression, Anglu gritted his teeth and then tightened the splints and bandages around his leg.
"Hiss!"
As he did this, he couldn't help but gasp, because the extensive abrasions on his arms and back were not yet fully healed.
The feeling of having the scab pulled is unpleasant, but Anglu endured the pain, tightly wrapping the bandage on his calf splint, and resolutely said to Johnny.
"Dad, stop reminiscing. We all know we can't stop!"
"No, we—perhaps we should stop. I mean, at least you should stop, Anglu!"
Johnny interrupted Anglu and then turned to look at the bedroom door.
Although the door was tightly closed, Johnny couldn't help but feel that two women were eavesdropping on his conversation with his son.
Johnny's fear of the two women made him lower his voice as he continued speaking to his shocked son.
"Don't look at me with that shocked expression, Angru. Although the general's camp seems to me to be full of hidden dangers, I don't think there will be any major chaos here in the short term."
"So, I plan to leave you here to recuperate, and I will return to Boston alone to find your mother!"
"How is that possible?!"
Before Johnny could finish speaking, Anglu grabbed his sleeve and muttered a curse at him.
"Are you crazy, Dad? How could you leave me here alone?!"
"I know what you're thinking. You think it's safe for me to stay, but we—damn it, the zombie apocalypse didn't even take us apart, yet we're forced to separate in this apocalypse!"
"What a joke! You'll never get rid of me. Even though I'm injured, you know how capable I am. Even if I'm upside down, I won't cause you much trouble."
"As for the motorcycle, I can't ride it now, but you can take me in a pickup truck, understand? We have to go together!"
"But----"
Listening to his son's impassioned tone, Johnny rubbed his hair vigorously.
"But, Anglu, the road back to Boston is destined to be fraught with danger, while the general's camp is at least safe, especially for a wounded soldier like you—"
"Are you kidding me?"
Upon hearing Johnny's words, Anglu suddenly grabbed Johnny's hand, glared at him with bloodshot eyes, and continued speaking through gritted teeth.
"Dad, do you really think the general's camp is safe?"
"Don't forget, our first-class family treatment was all earned thanks to your exploration efforts over the past week!"
"You brought back over three tons of canned food and drinking water to the entire camp by motorcycle, in exchange for our safety and a little bit of privilege!"
"But what happened after you left? You left me here all alone. Guess how long it will take before those bastards in the camp kick me out?"
At this point, Anglu simply grabbed his father's collar and pulled Johnny in front of him.
He leaned close to Johnny's ear and said...
"Dad, you've been out exploring with the team these past few days, so you don't know what's happening inside the camp."
"You know what? When I, the injured person, left our house and went to the community, I saw two people giving me hateful looks!"
"I asked Lilith and Eugenie why they were looking at me like that, and guess what Lilith said?"
"The relatives of those two people had been staying in the community due to injuries, just like me, but those two people had to stay outside for two days due to an accident while they were exploring."
"When they returned, their loved ones had already been buried!"
"Lilith didn't say why; she kept it from me, only telling me that they had lost their loved ones!"
"But guess why they died? Because this is the general's camp. From the very beginning, everyone was divided into different ranks based on their value. And in any environment with a fixed hierarchy, there's no room for mere accomplices to survive!"
At this point, Anglu tried to sit up straight, propped his splinted leg on the ground, put his arm around his father's shoulder, and whispered in Johnny's ear.
"Dad, trust me, at the earliest tonight, or at the latest tomorrow or the day after, find a way to get a pickup truck and park it in the woods near the community. We need to find a chance to leave in the middle of the night!"
"Oh?"
Upon hearing his son's words, Johnny pursed his lips and said with a wry smile.
"It seems you've made up your mind. So, you're not worried about it affecting those two women?"
"I shouldn't have worried in the first place, Dad, because I was stupid enough to forget that women are the most important resource in this camp!"
Anglu immediately replied to Johnny.
"Nothing here is more valuable than women, neither food nor weapons, so even if they kill us both, those two women will be fine!"
OK!
Hearing his son's words, Johnny finally made up his mind. He grabbed his son's wrist, patted his son's thigh, and said.
"Since you've made up your mind, I'll try to get a car. As for the General and Wesker, let me think about it. If we can leave peacefully, we'd better not take any risks!"
"Let's prepare a couple more days later. I plan to bring back more weapons to the general's camp in the next couple of days."
"Yesterday I found a gun shop in a nearby town. I plan to clear out the zombies around the shop little by little. Maybe in a day, maybe in two, the gun shop and its weapons might be enough for us to leave!"
At this point, Johnny hugged Anglu's head and pressed his forehead against Anglu's forehead.
He then left his son's bedside and strode toward the door.
Upon opening the door, Eugenie and Lilith were cleaning outside.
Seeing Johnny leave the ward, the two women immediately sidled up to him and said something.
"Honey, are you going out to get busy?"
"Dad, is Anglu alright?"
After greeting the two women, Johnny left the house for the church, picked up his weapons and armor, and left the camp with another companion.
And after Johnny left completely.
By the window, watching Johnny's departing figure, Lilith and Eugenie put down their sweeping tools and sat on the sofa, exchanging silent glances.
After a long silence, Lilith looked at Eugenie's melancholy eyes and said softly.
"Eugenie, is it really impossible for us to keep them here any longer?"
"Not necessarily, Lilith. I have one last idea; I'll try it tonight!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Eugenie reached out and grabbed Lilith's wrist, patting her forearm encouragingly.
After a long silence, Lilith spoke softly to Eugenie.
"They are both really nice. Although I was forced to become your daughter-in-law, they are gentlemen and strong, no weaker than Wesker, but with much better tempers."
"If I could, I—good heavens—I really don't want to have to serve someone else!"
"I know, Lilith, I know, so I will do my best, believe me!"
Eugenie gripped Lilith's hand tightly, then silently looked out the window.
In her eyes, two women dressed in slightly shabby clothes were passing by the window, and the lifelessness in their eyes made Eugenie tremble involuntarily.
Meanwhile, around 10 a.m., in the direction of Gavin Farm, at the RV campground on the outskirts of Marin City.
Eugene drove Gavin, Nikita, and Philip to the entrance of the RV campground.
After parking the car, Gavin opened the door, got out, and looked at the corpses around him.
After being left overnight, many of the corpses showed signs of being gnawed, appearing to be from birds or mammals.
Seeing this, Gavin frowned, then turned around and spoke to the two cars behind him.
"Martin, go check the bodies around here. I'm worried there might be a bear nearby!"
"Okay, boss."
Martin had just gotten out of the car when he immediately grabbed his rifle and headed toward the surrounding corpses.
As he left to check, Edward got out of the car and came to Gavin's side to say something.
"Boss, I'll go with you to clear the way ahead. Let Madam stay in Marin City to lead the team in preparing the safe houses."
"Um?"
Upon hearing this, Gavin couldn't help but glance at Nikita, then nodded slightly.
"Alright, thank you for your hard work, Edward."
"Ha, it's what I should do, boss!"
Edward and Gavin gave each other a high five, then Edward went over to Nikita and chatted with her for a bit.
After a few words, Nikita naturally walked to the group of eight in the back car, while Edward went to the vicinity of the Kaberheath and sat in the back seat.
Seeing Edward get into the car, Eugene put down the map and chuckled as he muttered a curse.
"After you fucking get on the bus, I won't have any pretty girls to look at anymore, you bastard!"
"Fuck you, Eugene, that's the boss's woman!"
Edward immediately retorted with a string of insults to Eugene.
Upon hearing this, Eugene chuckled and spread his hands in response to Edward.
"I know, I know. I didn't mean to do anything. Is it not allowed to just take a look? I respect you very much, but I do not deny your charm."
"Okay, you're quite the smooth talker, you jerk~"
Edward smiled and bumped fists with Eugene, while Philip, standing next to Edward, put down the map and took out a pair of sunglasses to put on.
Meanwhile, Gavin, standing in front of the two cars behind, spoke to the men who were gradually getting out of the vehicles.
"Guys, I'll lead the team to continue exploring and try to get us to the vicinity of Cedar Park before nightfall."
"You stay here for now, clean up the bodies in the RV campground, and then select a few large enough RVs to build a small safe house that won't be easily discovered by passing survivors."
"Then you can set your sights on the nearby Walmart warehouse. It's a huge logistics center, and it'll probably take a long time to move all the stuff inside."
"I took a look earlier; there are over twenty trucks near Walmart. You can load the goods onto the trucks little by little and then transport them back to our base!"
After saying that, Gavin clapped his hands and returned to the vicinity of the Kaberhide Shield, waiting for Martin's reply.
About two minutes later, after examining several corpses, Martin came to Gavin's side and whispered to him.
"Boss, there seem to be coyotes around here, but not many, probably no more than eight."
"I'll remind the guys to be careful!"
"OK."
Gavin patted Martin on the shoulder, then got into the co-pilot's seat of the Kerberus Shield.
Seeing Gavin sit down, Edward grinned mischievously and moved closer to Gavin, speaking to him.
"Boss, guess what that bastard Eugene just said to me?"
"Fuck you, Edward! I stopped tattling in third grade, you bastard!"
"Haha, Eugene, you're finished! You actually dared to covet the boss's woman! You're finished, hahaha!"
"Don't fucking talk nonsense. I just said Nikita is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, that's all!"
"Ha, you bastard, dare you look the boss in the eye and say that again, haha~"
Amidst the playful banter of the crew, the Kaiberhear Shield departed Marin City and continued towards its next destination.
After they left, the remaining guys huddled together and began exploring and cleaning up the surrounding area.
They moved the bodies out of the RVs and piled them together. Two people were assigned to clear the nearby grassland and create a site that could be used for burning.
The others conducted a thorough inspection of the RV, leaving no stone unturned, not even missing a perfectly preserved pack of chewing gum.
Martin greeted Nikita, then took Otto with him, and the two drove towards the Walmart distribution center in the distance.
Looking at the spacious and empty logistics center, the two exchanged a glance, and Otto pondered before speaking to Martin.
"We don't need to check the warehouse first, right? After all, things stored in a warehouse are definitely easier to preserve than those in a Walmart store."
"That's right, buddy, let's make a list of the goods in the Walmart store first, and then try to empty the store."
Martin responded as he drove through the warehouse district and parked his car in front of the Walmart store.
Looking at the almost empty shopping mall, Martin took out a cigarette, lit it, then stuck the gun out of the car window and whispered to Otto.
"You've read the zombie survival manual, right? So I'm going to fire now. Let's see how many hunters are around."
"OK, I'm ready!"
Following Martin's advice, Otto pulled out his shotgun and aimed it at the mall.
Martin then raised his pistol into the air and fired a shot.
boom!
After the loud noise, the two waited in the car for a long time, only to find that two zombies barely managed to break through the Walmart gate and rush towards the car.
Looking at the two lonely zombies, Martin didn't even bother to fire a shot. He just exhaled a puff of smoke and said with a smile.
"Luckily, the apocalypse happened at 3 a.m., so Walmart was completely empty of customers. Otherwise, I wouldn't dare to explore large shopping malls like that!"
"That's right, Mazefakr————"
As Otto aimed, he chuckled and replied to Martin.
"If the apocalypse happened during the day, who knows how many fat people would be buying sweets on electric scooters at Walmart!"
"And those fat guys who are practically incapable of exercise, who knows what disgusting monsters they'll turn into under the influence of the zombie fungus, damn it!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Otto pulled the trigger of his shotgun.
boom!
boom!
After two loud explosions, all the zombies fell to the ground.
Meanwhile, in Walmart's warehouse area, a pair of eyes filled with exhaustion and despair suddenly opened!
