Chapter 325 Departure Ahead of Schedule
Chapter 325 Departure Ahead of Schedule
Xu Xiaoyan set her alarm for 6 a.m. the next day, put her phone next to her pillow, lay down, and closed her eyes.
After a long day, my body was completely exhausted, but strangely enough, after lying down, my mind was wide awake and I couldn't fall asleep no matter what.
I can't quite describe the feeling in my heart.
Feeling a little reluctant? Not really.
A little excited? Not really. She had no idea what it would be like outside. The ground was heating up, water was nowhere to be found, and there was still no news of the advance team. Going out might be a path to survival, or it might be a path to death.
But what if you stay?
She had witnessed the chaos of a power outage once before, and she didn't want to see it again, waiting for the water supply to run out, for order to collapse, and for all sorts of unknown things to happen.
So we have to go.
She turned over and buried her face in the pillow.
As I pondered, my consciousness gradually faded.
……
I don't know how much time passed, but my phone suddenly rang.
The shrill ringtone was particularly jarring in the quiet night. Xu Xiaoyan suddenly opened her eyes, her heart pounding, and grabbed her phone.
The screen is lit up and displays: Grandpa Ge.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly pressed the answer button.
"Uncle Ge?"
A huge noise came from the other end of the phone: the roar of a car engine, the voices of many people talking, and something clanging and banging, all mixed together.
She had to hold the phone tightly to her ear to barely hear it.
"Xiao Yan!" Uncle Ge's voice came through the noise, broken and intermittent, "We're leaving first... not by elevator... but through another underground passage... remember to ask around!"
Xu Xiaoyan's mind went blank for a moment, and she suddenly became clear-headed.
"Uncle Ge? Uncle Ge!" she shouted into the phone. "What did you say? What underpass?"
The noise over there grew louder, like someone shouting something, along with car horns. Uncle Ge's voice became even more muffled, almost inaudible.
"You...inquired about...the passage..." The rest of the words were completely drowned out by the noise.
Then, the signal abruptly stopped.
The call was interrupted.
Xu Xiaoyan stared at her phone screen for two seconds, then suddenly sat up. Her bare feet touched the cold ground, which sent a shiver down her spine.
The army has set off ahead of schedule!
She instantly understood that when Uncle Ge said "I'm setting off first," it meant that the troops had moved out ahead of time, not at seven or eight in the morning as she had imagined, but at around four in the morning!
As for the "other underground passage" that Uncle Ge mentioned on the phone, she was filled with doubts.
It's not an elevator? Is there another way to get to the ground?
She didn't have time to think it through; only one thought occupied her mind—she couldn't wait any longer!
Xu Xiaoyan jumped out of bed, grabbed the backpack she had packed the night before, opened the door and rushed out.
I ran out of the building, but the night outside was still shrouded in a gray haze.
There is no true night in the dungeon, but around 4 a.m., the lights are dimmed and there are almost no people on the streets.
With her bag on her back, she ran as fast as she could towards the repair shop.
She ran until her whole body was hot, her forehead was sweating, and her lungs felt like they were about to explode, making it hard to breathe, but she dared not stop at all.
She managed to run there in just over twenty minutes.
From a distance, she could see the lights of the repair shop.
The shop was brightly lit, with the door wide open. Inside, you could hear hammering and the sizzling of welding. Several cars were parked outside; some were already modified, while others were still being modified.
She ignored them and rushed into the store.
"master!"
The worker in the blue overalls was welding something on the hood of the truck when he heard the shout and looked up. He was taken aback when he saw Xu Xiaoyan, who was covered in sweat and panting heavily.
"Hey, what brings you here at this hour?"
Xu Xiaoyan held her knees and took a few breaths before straightening up and looking at the pickup truck.
She almost didn't recognize it; was this still her little truck?
Four new tires firmly supported the car body, with treads so deep you could fit your fingers inside; they were clearly the kind of tires that wouldn't be afraid of rough roads.
The car window glass is more than twice as thick as before, and it is clear with a faint gray-green tint, which is the unique texture of bulletproof glass.
The car body is noticeably taller, and the new steel plate is slightly different in color from the original, but the seams are handled very carefully, so you can't tell it's an aftermarket addition unless you look closely.
The solar panels on the roof are mounted at a perfect angle, and the power cords run down from the edge of the roof to the trunk. The mechanic just helped her connect the battery box and the solar panels, so the solar panels can charge the battery box during the day when she drives.
"Almost done," the technician said. "Give me another half hour, and I guarantee it will be finished."
Xu Xiaoyan nodded, a weight lifted from her heart.
Then she suddenly remembered something. Last night, we agreed that the car modification would include a case of wine and three bottles of wine. The case had already been given, and we agreed to pick up the three bottles today.
She looked around. There were quite a few people in the store, several workers were busy, and several drivers were standing at the door. She couldn't take things out of her space in front of so many people.
"Master," she said, "I'm going out for a bit, I'll be right back."
The master didn't even look up, just grunted in response.
Xu Xiaoyan turned and ran out of the store, heading towards the street corner.
There's a public restroom over there; it should be empty at this time.
She ran inside, pushed open the first cubicle, and found it empty.
The second one is also empty.
The third one, is someone there? She glanced at it; the door was ajar, but no one was there.
She went into the innermost cubicle and locked the door.
She took out three bottles of wine from her spatial storage, put them in her backpack, and zipped it up.
He stayed in the cubicle for a few more seconds, calmed his breathing, and then pushed the door open and went out.
Back at the repair shop, the mechanic was still busy. She walked over, put down her backpack, unzipped it, and revealed the three bottles of wine.
"Master, the wine has been brought."
The craftsman looked up, put down his welding torch, wiped his hands on his apron, walked over, bent down and looked at the three bottles of wine. Just like last time, he carefully checked the seals and labels to make sure they were intact.
"Okay," he nodded, a satisfied smile on his face. "Don't worry, I've got your car all set up. You won't be afraid of any kind of road it's on."
Xu Xiaoyan smiled but didn't say anything.
She walked to the car and reached out to touch the newly installed door. The steel plate was much thicker than the original one, and it made a dull sound when she tapped it, not the sound of thin sheet metal.
"This glass," she asked, "can it really stop bullets?"
The driver came over and tapped on the car window.
"It really is," he said. "It's not just ordinary thickened glass, it's genuine bulletproof glass."
Xu Xiaoyan wanted to say something, but didn't know what to say, so she just nodded and said, "Thank you, Master."
The foreman waved his hand and continued working. The sizzling sound of welding rang out from time to time, and sparks flew on the ground before quickly going out.
Xu Xiaoyan stood to the side, watching the car gradually become more sturdy, and her heart slowly calmed down.
