Chapter 32 Death
Chapter 32 Death
Her gaze followed the golden dot and connected with the whole world.
According to the village chief's experience, Zheng Tingfeng shouldn't be alive. The village chief became the first victim after providing the wish to the wordless book.
However, when Jiang Xingni and Pei Zhaoye saw Zheng Tingfeng in the surveillance footage, apart from holding a blank book in her arms, she seemed to be acting normally.
"Could it be that the village chief's influence is still working on Zheng Tingfeng?" Pei Zhaoye glanced at Jiang Xingni and noticed that her golden eyes seemed to be reflecting light.
Jiang Xingni didn't respond visually, but simply shook her head and retorted, "The age is wrong."
"Zheng Tingfeng is past the age of forgiveness in shadow puppetry; she's already fifteen."
She was the same age as the girl from Nanshan Village who was killed by a group of children for being kind. No matter what, age would not be the reason for her being pardoned.
Jiang Xingni finally gleaned the information he wanted from the seemingly meaningless golden dot.
"She's still alive," the little girl said softly. "Though somewhat weak, she is indeed alive. Is her current state more similar to that of the children affected by shadow puppetry?"
Pei Zhaoye stared at Jiang Xingni for a few seconds, then he spoke thoughtfully, "Sometimes I really want to know, Xingxing, what does the world look like through your eyes?"
Jiang Xing glanced at him but smiled without saying a word.
"What is your superpower?" The head nurse breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this. Although she didn't laugh, it was obvious that her tightly furrowed brows relaxed.
Pei Zhaoye turned his head to look at Jiang Xingni, and only after Jiang Xingni nodded slightly at him did he answer, "She can see the truth of this world."
"Real? That's an interesting concept." The head nurse raised an eyebrow. "If I were younger, I would definitely want to study her more thoroughly."
"Can you tell which way this world is headed?" the nurses behind them asked in a flurry of questions, their bright eyes filled with curiosity.
Most of the time they appear incredibly mature, only revealing the carefree spirit that comes with their age at this time, though the head nurse, who is supervising the interns, seems somewhat helpless.
Several girls, close to the age of the older sister, peeked out from behind the head nurse, and Jiang Xingni pointed in a direction in a very cooperative manner.
In Jiang Xingni's vision, the golden light in that direction was incredibly thick, almost screaming at Jiang Xingni, "Come quickly, come quickly!"
Considering that Jiang Xingni had seen the golden dots closely connected to weaknesses in the past, she reasonably speculated that the place indicated by the golden light this time was probably also closely connected to the exit of the Ghost Realm.
"Over there," Jiang Xing said. "It's very important; it's probably related to the exit."
The head nurse glanced at the students behind her, then looked at patient number one: "Bed number one."
The first patient obediently raised his head and looked at the head nurse, who then pointed to her student.
"Please protect them, okay?" the head nurse asked softly.
Patient Number One's gaze followed the head nurse's fingertip, sweeping over the nurses before he nodded: "I'm not crazy."
The head nurse said helplessly, "Nobody said you're crazy."
After the first patient nodded, the head nurse turned around and looked at Jiang Xingni and Pei Zhaoye.
"I'll go with you," she said calmly. "I'm worried about you going with me; Bed Number One will stay here to protect the students."
Jiang Xingni is understandable.
After all, she herself didn't know whether the destination of the gold point was the exit or somewhere else, and she couldn't let innocent people take risks with them.
"You're not necessarily..." Pei Zhaoye frowned slightly, but before he could finish speaking, he was interrupted by the head nurse.
A faint smile appeared on the woman's usually indifferent face, almost threatening: "There's no reason for an adult to hide behind two minors."
Pei Zhaoye was about to refute, since the head nurse had just been with them in the back, but then he remembered that Patient Number One had indeed rushed to the front line with Jiang Xingni.
—Just because minors can't go to the battlefield alone, does that mean we can send patients to the battlefield?
Although he had these thoughts in his mind, Pei Zhaoye didn't bring them up and simply let Patient Number One accompany them.
Putting aside the physical strength of the head nurses, just the idea of having patients and minors together, based on Pei Zhaoye's understanding of the head nurses, was practically jumping into her minefield.
No one objected. Jiang Xingni and Pei Zhaoye walked in front, while the head nurse hid her shotgun under her white coat, looking frail and delicate.
Once away from the placenta, Jiang Xingni's view turned into a crudely made picture, with only Pei Zhaoye and the head nurse standing out from the rest of the scene.
"What did you encounter in that room?" Jiang Xingni asked.
She remembered that they had come out of the house together; if it weren't for them, Jiang Xingni had planned to go in with Pei Zhaoye.
There was nothing to hide. The head nurse's expression remained indifferent as she replied, "It's a game. Once you enter the room, you enter the game's territory. There are corresponding rules, punishments, and rewards."
"The machete on bed number one was taken from inside the room; it was the winner's prize," the head nurse explained simply.
Her eyes were calm, but Jiang Xingni could clearly see a hint of sorrow in them: "At first, we didn't know the rules, and two students died inside."
Jiang Xingni and Pei Zhaoye both fell silent.
To be honest, this wasn't the first time either of them had heard anything related to death, nor was it the first time anyone present had learned of the death of someone close to them.
Jiang Xingni grew up in the lower city and was probably most familiar with human corpses.
The road she took to school every morning would occasionally be littered with severed limbs and remains that had not yet been cleaned up, and the lingering smell of blood would drift to Jiang Xingni's nose.
Jiang Xingni had long been accustomed to this kind of world, from leaving the lower city to entering the city, to her school, where she heard people around her talking about their homes and their daily lives.
Jiang Xingni sometimes felt as if he were in another world. After all, they were in the same city, but the difference in their fates could not be described by the phrase "worlds apart".
This wasn't the first time Pei Zhaoye had witnessed death.
From a real-world, forum perspective, he is a member of the main characters, and whether in the past or the future, he can never be separated from death and pain.
From Jiang Xingni's perspective, Pei Zhaoye is a superhuman, unlike Jiang Xingni who suddenly gained superpowers at the age of almost adulthood. He is like all superhumans, growing up with his superpowers.
Besides, even the shadow puppet show ghost realm that I experienced just a few days ago cannot be considered foolproof.
This is especially true once you enter this eerie realm; the shadow of death is ever-present, never escaping your notice.
